Text Tools: practical guide
Choose a text tool based on the question: count length, compare two drafts, change letter case, or transform individual list entries. Before comparing text, decide whether spaces, punctuation, line endings, and capitalization should count as differences. Keep a copy of the original when applying a transformation.
Worked example
When comparing two paragraphs, a diff can show that one sentence moved and another word changed. A list comparer instead checks entries line by line, which is useful for inventory names or identifiers. A word counter may treat hyphenated terms, emoji, or languages without spaces differently from an editor.
What to check before relying on a result
Case conversion is language-sensitive: names, acronyms, and letters with diacritics may not follow English rules. Counts can vary by whether the tool reports characters, code points, or words. Review the output in its final context, especially before publishing or importing it into another system.
