Unit Converters: practical guide
Start by identifying the quantity, then select both the source and destination units. The same number can mean very different things across dimensions: converting 10 metres to feet is valid, while converting metres to kilograms is not. For compound units, check whether the tool expects a length, area, volume, speed, or data rate.
Worked example
A 2.5 metre board is 250 centimetres because one metre contains 100 centimetres. For area, a 2 by 3 metre room is 6 square metres; converting each side and multiplying is safer than treating square metres as a length. Compare the displayed unit as well as the numeric result.
What to check before relying on a result
Results can be rounded for display. Temperature conversions use an offset as well as a scale, unlike most length conversions. Some customary units have regional definitions, and engineering work may require a specified precision or standard. Keep the original value and unit with any copied result.
